The festival most representative of Hakodate
is the Hakodate Port
Festival (August 1-5). This festival began in 1935 to celebrate the 77th
anniversary of Hakodate Port, which opened in 1859, and has since developed
into Hakodate's largest festival at which the fervor of the citizens of
Hakodate comes alive. Starting with a display of 10,000 fireworks, approximately
30,000 citizens dance through the town in the "Wasshoi Hakodate"
parade. In addition tothe various festival floats, the port dance and
the "squid dance," which is unique to Hakodate, are also popular.
Various other festivals are also held: Hakodate Goryokaku Festival, which
is a historical festival commemorating the Hakodate War (3rd Saturday
and Sunday of May); Hakodate Festival of Flowers and Greenery, during
which the city is decorated with flowers and greenery(June); Takadaya
Kahei Festival, which honos Kahei Takadaya, who established the foundation
of Hakodate's development (late July); and the Hakodate Yunokawa Spa Isaribi
Festival (3rd Saturday and Sunday of August). Don't' fail to watch the
fishermen's fire to attract squid during the peak of squid fishing.
In Hakodate, which is working to promote city planning with light as the
theme, a wide variety of festivals featuring light are held. For example,
the Hakodate Open-air Theater of citizen's own creation is held from late
July to early August.
Hakodate Christmas Fantasy (December 1-25) is popular for the gigantic
Christmas tree decorated on the sea in front of the cluster of red brick
warehouses. At the Hakodate Winter Festival (December 1-the end of February),
trees at Nijukken Zaka Slope and Motoi Zaka Slope are illuminated with
lights.
The Dream of Pentagonal Stars (Hoshi-no-Yume) is held from mid-January
tothe end of February, during which the moat of Goryokaku Park is wonderfully
illuminated. |

Notes |
| (1) Hakodate |
In 1859, Hakodate became
one of Japan's first international trading ports, along with
Yokohama and Nagasaki, to open to the world. Since then, a
variety of foreign cultures and civilizations, many of which
arrived in Japan and Hokkaido for the first time, have entered
Japan through Hakodate port. In the waterfront area, red brick
warehouses are reflected on the water surface. A variety of
stores and restaurants surround the bay, which once served
as an avenue for foreign cultures. This area has become one
of the most popular tourist destinations in Hakodate. |

Protruding into the Tsugaru
Straits, Mt. Hakodate, 334 m hight, serves as an ideal observatory
offering a panoramic view of the city and its port. The observation
facility established at the summit provides a bird's eye view
of the city, which looks like a bridge crossing the sea. When
night falls and the windows of buildings and houses are illuminated,
the scenery from Mt. Hakodate changes all at once; now the
city looks like the Milky Way floating in the ocean. Such
breathtaking beauty makes us forget the passage of time. |
