The
port of Beppu is located in the western part of Beppu Bay. As a tourist
and hot spring resort promoting internationalization, Beppu Port is improving
its large-scale passenger wharf as a seaside entrance to the city.
The port is very convenient as an access to the famous sightseeing spots
in Kyushu, such as the onsens (hot springs), Mt. Aso, the largest
caldera volcano in Japan, Usa Shrine and Kunisaki peninsula with its many
ancient temples.
There are now eight berths including the 12 meter deep Ishigaki Area No.3
wharf, which has been constructed for ocean liners and has an extensive
passenger and car ferry terminal. |

Beppu is the leading hot spring resort (onsen),
and has the world's 2nd largest volume of hot spring water. You will certainly
enjoy your experience of these baths. For example, you can try "jigokumushi"
which is the food prepared using the hot spring water, "fango treatment"
which is a mud cosmetic treatment, and "town walk tours" which
are guided by local people giving explanations of the history and culture.
There are also major attractions called "jigoku" in Beppu. Long
ago, people in Beppu called the onsen a "Jigoku" or Hell, because
it violently spurted out fumes from deep in the earth . Local people started
making sightseeing trips called "Jigokumeguri" or Hell Pilgrimages.
Moreover, Beppu is abundant in marine products. You can eat delicious
seafood, such as "Sekisaba" and "Shirositakarei" which
are specialties of Oita Prefecture, and are very popular among Japanese
people.
There are lots of interesting events in Beppu. For instance, the "Ogiyama
Fire Festival" where the side of Mt. Ohira is set alight, is held
on the first Saturday in April. The event is famous for the beautiful
spectacle of the burning. "Christmas HANABI Fantasia" is held
on December 23rd/24th every year, where elaborately designed fireworks are
let offaccompanied by music. The view is wonderful while enjoying dinner
on a cruise ship. |
